Detention Basin Construction Project Location: Hwy 41 between Miami and Marco Island, FL |
Construction site prior to beginning of McCubbin's work. Site is to become a detention basin that filters silt out of canals to clean the flow of water into parks and aquafers in the Everglades. |
Construction site during McCubbin's work - excavating and dozing. |
Completed detention basin - not yet filled with water. |
Another view of the completed detention basin - de-cant overflow structure can be seen in the middle of the basin in the distance. |
Up-close of the de-cant overflow structure. The detention basin uses a hydraulic dredging process: as the basin fills with water, the smaller pipes have floaters and lift with the water level as it rises, draining water only from the top of the basin, while the silt/solids settle to the bottom of the basin. The clean water flowing in from the smaller pipes then exits the structure and the basin via the larger pipe at the base of the structure. |
Completed detention basin filling with water. |
Site where water exits the detention basin - water exits back into the wetlands. The rocks at the exit site filter any remaining silt in the water. |
